When talking about AI in defense, the conversation quickly turns to algorithms. In practice, however, other factors are decisive: data availability, integration capability, release logic, and the question of whether people have good reason to trust the machine.

Thesis: AI integration is less a technology problem than a friction problem.

The points of friction that really slow down programs
Legacy infrastructure and architectural breaks

Military IT landscapes are robust, but have grown historically. AI systems, however, require continuous data flows, secure interfaces, monitoring, and updateability. Where these fundamentals are lacking, media breaks, manual workarounds, and delays arise.

Rule of thumb: If operation and updating are not taken into account, the result is a laboratory product.

Data silos and lack of data responsibility

Operators must be able to assess when AI helps and when it errs. This requires boundaries, test scenarios, and fallback rules.

Interoperability as an alliance capability

In a multinational context, systems only work in combination. Standards and joint tests must be established early on, otherwise costly special solutions will arise.
